The Address Mezze Grill, South Woodford

I’m often meeting friends in and around London to go out to eat, but this post is of a place a little closer to home. The Address Mezze Grill in South Woodford has become a weekly staple for my parents and I, often filling our Sunday dinner slot with some Mediterranean flavours. This is quite a long post so you might want to get comfy, and prepare to get hungry!

The Address should have been blogged a long time ago. It has been open for almost a year now, and I’ve been eating there the whole time. My best friend picked it for a group birthday meal last year July and I’ve been going with my family ever since.

You can browse the menu before you visit so you can use your browsing time to devour a basket of warm Turkish bread.

As my family are pretty regular customers, there isn’t much on the menu we haven’t tried, but we stuck by our favourites on this visit.

We’re quite a greedy bunch so usually order two starter dishes each, and then feast across it all. Dad doesn’t eat meat and is mostly vegan with the occasional pescetarian day, and is by no means limited for choice at The Address. His starter favourites are the mixed nuts salad and pan seared scallops.

If you’re a regular reader, you will know I’m all about the calamari. I’ve never had bad calamari here, and trust me I’ve had a lotttttt of calamari here!

I’ve had the scallops once or twice myself and they really are amazing. Underneath each perfectly cooked, melt-in-the-mouth scallop is a Malibu butter and an avocado beetroot mash.

Mum sticks to the sigara boregi: filo pastry filled with feta cheese and spinach with sweet pepper sauce. I’m not too keen on feta but Mum loves them with the Chef’s Recommendation of chargrilled octopus.

Calamari and halloumi – a match made in Mediterranean heaven.

On to the main courses…

Every main course is accompanied by a fresh salad (top right) but we usually order some extra greens: grilled asparagus and creamy spinach. The creamy spinach is laced with garlic, which I love.

We each ordered quite contrasting main courses. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Dad eat anything other than the chargrilled sea bass here. It does usually come with the head on, but I suspect that was removed when they saw me snapping away. Dad creates a fancy fish and chips with the side order of hand-cut chips with rock salt, cracked pepper and oregano.

Some main dishes, like Mum’s lamb cutlets, are served with rice and grilled vegetables so you might not need to order additional sides.

I’ve saved the best until last with my choice of main course. There are two king prawn options for main courses: The Address special king prawns with onion, mushroom, garlic mustard and cream served with rice, or the seasoned and chargrilled king prawns served with vegetables. I was already set to be all garlic and creamed out with the spinach so opted for the chargrilled king prawns.

Massive, meaty, flavoursome (I’m running out of adjectives here…) king prawns! It could get a little messy here as they are served in their shells, but scored down the middle ready for you to break open and get stuck right in.

I want you right now.

Dessert after all of that… yes I know. I think we’ve got worms.

I have to admit, I’ve had everything on the dessert menu and I promise they are all delicious. On this particular visit I stuck by my number one choice of the poached pear, while Mum and Dad had the pomegranate crème brûlée and ‘The Address Special Dessert’. The Address Special is shredded wheat rolled with walnuts and deep-fried served with honey syrup and vanilla ice cream.

The poached pear is to dieeeeeee for! Every time I have it I think, ‘I’m sure I can make a poached pear’, but I’m sure there’s a top secret recipe for this one.

She (yes, she) looks predictable and plain from the outside, but like every amazing woman inside she is full of surprises. Pistachio and peach snap cream cheese, how about that.

Well that’s all folks! I couldn’t have squeezed in another crumb.

We usually call ahead to reserve a table when we visit on the weekend, but we’ve arrived unannounced during the week and always been seated. Book for groups of course. The Address has shop front parking, or there are usually spaces down the first residential street. If you plan on commuting, it’s a short walk from South Woodford station. Whatever your travel arrangements are, get to The Address ASAP!
