NYC: Big Daddy’s, Upper West Side

It’s always a good morning in New York!

If you’re visiting NY, make sure you start or end a day in Central Park – it’s a must! Not only is it (usually) beautiful and bright, but it’s a sure fire way to help burn off some of those calories if you’re munching your way around the city like Mother and I.

On to the good stuff!

Welcome to Big Daddy’s on the Upper West Side. There are three branches in Manhattan so take your pick!

There are certain combinations of words that can put a smile on my face. Big Daddy’s have one of my favourites on their website: we have wifi. They also have bright neon decor with a 1970’s vibe going on. The walls are covered with 1960’s and 70’s memorabilia including advertising, vinyl and photos from TV programmes (I had no clue, Mum remembered). The music was great!

There is a very large menu with lots of choices. We had a look online in advance so weren’t completely overwhelmed by it all. Mum did have one question for our waitress, “what are tater tots?” Tater tots are tiny little nuggets of hash brown, in case you didn’t know either.

I ordered the Bacon Cakes: fluffy pancakes loaded with crispy bacon. When they say loaded, they mean loaded. There was bacon inside the pancake. Mind blown.

If a bacon overload wasn’t reason to love this breakfast enough, the actual pancakes were amazing! When they say fluffy, the mean IT’S SO FLUFFY!! There are Oreo pancakes on the breakfast menu that were my second option, but I don’t think they could have topped the bacon cakes.

Mum’s order of Get Smart, which included egg whites with spinach, caramelised onions and sautéed mushrooms, was also accompanied by tater tots and a side of toast. She enjoyed it, but it wasn’t as good as my bacon cakes (sorry they were just that good).

10/10 recommendation for breakfast or brunch in New York from me. Big Daddy’s have been in business since 1969, so they must be doing something right!
